Paul Gauthier’s business life was spent in the family company, The Adams County Free Press in Corning as printer, reporter, sports editor and editor-publisher, the later for a period of 34 years from 1949 to 1983. During four years of service in World War II, Gauthier served as daily briefing and information officer in 1944-45 to General George S. Patton’s general staff and to 40-50 radio and press correspondents covering the Third Army through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Following the war he retained an interest in the public relations and promotional areas of the National Guard. In 1976, Gauthier was appointed by Governor Robert D. Ray to a Blue Ribbon committee to advise the Governor on Guard affairs. After selling the Free Press, he remained on its staff as a part-time reporter, writing general news and features. His first book, “Brickbats From F Company” was published in 1982.

Gauthier held a long interest in the history of the Icaria Colony and its’ people who settled near Corning from 1852 to 1898. In 1992, he published “Quest for Utopia: The Icarians of Adams County”. He was a strong supporter for the restoration of the Icarian Village east of Corning.
